Introduction to CGI Technology

Welcome to my Blog! This series is for my Future Cultures (BCM325) Digital Artefact, this series will explore CGI technology. My first post is providing an introduction to the world of CGI technology. I will be taking any suggestions about any topics about CGI technology, leave a comment below letting me know what you would like to see.

CGI technology is also know as computer generated imagery, it ‘is the application of the field of computer graphics’ which create special effects’ (Science Daily). This technology is starting to be used more and more in films, television programs, commercials and printed media. The use I am most interested in is the ability to fill in actors, using this technology to edit actors into movies. This technology was used in Fast and Furious 7 after Paul Walker passed away before the movie was finished filming. This was also used in the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 after Phillip Seymour Hoffman passed away before the movie was finished filming. As this technology is starting to become available to more people through apps and websites on the internet such as DeepFake. This technology is now starting to be used for more things rather than just movies, it’s becoming very popular in porn. It is used to make fake celebrity porn by editing celebrities faces onto porn stars with technology like DeepFake.

I first discovered this technology through Shane Dawson’s Conspiracy Theory Series in late January 2019. I had never heard of this technology before and it was very fascinating how the technology works and what people are able to do. Although the possible uses of this technology that Shane shows makes the increase of use and availability of this technology a little scary. The ability for anyone to access this technology and what they are able to create can become dangerous. If you’re interested in this video check it out on Shane Dawson’s Youtube channel, link will be below.

Through this series I will continue to explore Deep Fake by attempting to use this technology as well as looking ethically and other concerns about this technology.
